Getting around Fez
Les repères pratiques pour organiser sereinement votre séjour à Fès et votre voyage au Maroc.
The city of Fez in Morocco is made up of 3 different types of towns, as you will also see on the Riad Jamaï website: there is Fez El Bali, Fez El Jdid and the New City of Fez. Depending on which part of the city you are in, you will not need to use the same modes of transport.
Choosing the right type of transport in the city of Fez
To get around the old city, all you need is a good pair of sneakers or walking shoes. In this medina, most residents get around on foot as the narrow streets do not allow any 4-wheeled vehicle to pass. You will come across a few rare scooters during your walk, but what you will encounter most of the time are donkeys or horses, mostly used to transport goods.
The little red taxis of Fès Boulemane
For the Mellah or Fez el Jdid, transport is by small taxi, meaning the red taxis which are limited to 3 people per ride. In Fez, the color of the small taxis is red; they are small-sized cars that allow trips back and forth between the medina, Fez el Jdid and the new city. 2 types of rides are offered: either an exclusive ride where you pay the full fare, or you share the ride with other taxi passengers to reach a fixed point on the other side of the city.
The big white taxis of the Fez region
Long-distance trips are made by white taxi; in most cases these are white Mercedes cars bearing the emblem of the Fès-Boulemane region. For example, upon your arrival at the airport, it is the white taxis that will take you to your riad or hotel. If you wish to visit the Fez region (link to the Fez region page), once again these are the Mercedes taxis. However, they are not able to take you from one place to another within the city of Fez, for that you need the red taxis.
