Designated in 2001 by the UN as one of the major events contributing to dialogue between civilizations, the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music, created in 1994 by the Esprit de Fès Foundation, offers every year a dialogue of spiritualities through music, thus helping to create a culture of universal peace.

The medina of Fes, an exceptional venue for music

Drawing its inspiration from its long tradition of welcoming caravans linking the Mediterranean to the Niger loop, thus fostering the exchange of precious objects, learned manuscripts, but above all ideas, the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music is intimately linked to the history of the age-old walls that host this exceptional event, the most popular in the former imperial capital.

More than a music festival, cultural encounters

For this occasion, and over about ten days in late May or early June, a rich musical programme where koras, guitars, percussion and houds compete for the favour of summer visitors, as well as debates, remind us that a plural, ethical and spiritual world depends only on our ability to open up to others… Next edition: May 2016

For some years now, alongside the festival, a forum has developed to exchange ideas about the world’s cultures. Festival-goers can even attend several film screenings in the medina, for example near Boujloud Gate, in the Batha district.

Concert venues in the medina of Fes

Several sites have been selected to host the Fes Festival of Sacred Music. The venues are largely the same from one edition to the next, and include the Batha Museum, Bab Makina, Dar Adiyel, and the Sidi cultural complex. A few personal initiatives also allow, alongside the official programme, for concerts to be held in certain private traditional houses. The medina is the essential setting for these festivities through its landmarks such as the gates, the walls, the squares, the museums and certain Fes riads.
