Mosques

9 500 ruelles, un musée à ciel ouvert classé au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco.

The mosques of the Fez medina are absolutely magnificent, they overlook all the homes of the Fassis with ease and style. Some mosques are very ancient since they were built at the same time as the houses of the Fez medina in Morocco. Riad Jamaï will present below the two most famous mosques of the medina, the Andalusian mosque and the Quaraouine mosque.

350 mosques in the Fez medina

There are approximately 350 mosques present in each district of the old city of Fez. Imagine the beauty of hearing the call to prayer when the muezzins sing for all the citizens of Fez, it is an exceptional spectacle that can be enjoyed from the terrace of Riad Jamaï (link riad jamaï terrace). The mosques are both the sound and the image of this Fez medina, the sound coming from these minarets to hear « the voices » that embody prayer and that make the call for the faithful 5 times a day.

The song of the minarets of the imperial city

After the sound of the mosques, tourists’ curiosity finds its answer with the image. An image seen from the heights of the city of Fez such as a Borj or a guesthouse terrace, the minarets dominate with character. These minarets are all different from one another, some are white like that of the Andalusian mosque (link andalusian mosque), others are weathered by time and the elements, still others are made of zellige, some with terracotta with touches of green. These images overlooking the medina are magnificent, but the view from the heart, from the alleyways, is even more sumptuous.

The Quaraouine and Andalusian mosques

As you walk through the medina, the doors of the mosques are ajar, Riad Jamaï cannot describe each one of them, 350 mosques, places of prayer, places of culture and history. Two mosques embody the creation of the city of Fez and the practice of Islam in this Fez medina, these are the Quaraouine and Andalusian mosques. On each side of the Fez river, they were built by the Kairouan people of that time on one side and the Andalusians on the other. Two peoples who found their place on the banks of the Fez river. It is not through these few lines that we will write the history but rather make you want to know more about this history, still preserved intact and for which Riad Jamaï promotes and facilitates the discovery of this magnificent city of Fez.
