The Quaraouine district, left bank of Fes El Bali
At the origin of Fes, a water source allowed the civilization of Moulay Idriss to settle on the banks of this river which was later called oued Fes. The Quaraouiyine district represents all the prestige of this thousand-year-old city, especially because of the first university in the world, recognizable by its green tiled roofs. The Kairouans district, from which comes the name Karaouine with various spellings depending on the language and translation, this district is therefore also home to a large, immaculately white mosque.
The Andalusian district, right bank of Fes el Bali
The district was the second district of the medina Fes to be created on the other side of the bank of the oued fes, opposite that of the Quaraouiyine. The district built a large mosque, in order to rival the Kairouans mosque, these Andalusians who came down from Spain practiced Islam like their neighbors.
