Fes: oldest library in the world

Fes has reopened, a few months ago, a jewel of its medina, surely what represents the oldest library in the world. Indeed, after years of restoration this cultural site, unfortunately looted several times, is finding a second life with a presentation of unique works in the world, for which historians, political scientists and researchers have a very particular interest.

This library was founded over a thousand years ago by a woman within the very heart of the medina of Fes, and the story is beautiful since it was also a woman who was responsible for the restoration of this historic site. Aziza Chaouni, a Moroccan architect by profession, led the rehabilitation of this cultural gem.

Al Quaraouiyine University, incredible works

The English newspaper The Guardian conducted an in-depth investigation into this library as old as the medina and its foundation with the Quaraouiyine. A major restoration campaign was carried out. This cultural landmark for the city of Fes and for Morocco represents all the knowledge that this city held within the Arab world. This great center of knowledge was founded in the 9th century by Fatima Al Fihriya, descendant of a wealthy Tunisian merchant.

Works classified as treasures of Morocco

The library had exceptional works in the past, but several lootings and a lack of security scattered these historical works throughout the world. Among the works still accessible, one can note a Koran calligraphed on camel skin, dated to the opening of the library, the 9th century. This library is part of Fes‘s new strategy and its cultural positioning on tourism in Morocco, which is why a laboratory has been integrated into this library to enable the preservation and digitization of manuscripts.

Among the many treasures kept by the library, a Koran calligraphed on camel skin, dated to the IXth century. A laboratory has been set up and specially equipped to ensure the preservation and digitization of the most precious manuscripts.

To conclude, as architect Aziza Chaouini testifies, this renovation contributes to UNESCO’s project for the old city of Fez. “The Medina has the largest pedestrian street network in the world. It is not a city for tourists, but a living city. It is a model of sustainable city.”
