Moroccan craftsmanship is renowned throughout the world and there are countless shops that have opened dedicated to Morocco’s products and expertise. In line with this recognised quality, for which a label exists called « Morocco HandMade », the Fes region-Meknes will be labelled in a few weeks.

This label attribution comes after a study carried out by the regional craft directorate, and the results are unequivocal: Fes-Meknes carries out exceptional work around Moroccan craftsmanship. The Morocco Handmade certification was launched in 2016 with several labellings from the very first year, reflected in the production site.

The label plays a role in recognising the maintenance and development of craftsmanship in Morocco, with a strong focus on promoting and ensuring the quality of products made in the Fes medina.

Recognition of Moroccan craftsmen and their geographical origins are two criteria of the label, which help safeguard ancestral know-how. This plan is part of the development project initiated a few years ago called Fes 2015.

Discover craftsmanship from a riad in Fes

As Abderrahim Belkeyat, regional director of craftsmanship, states: « the craftsmanship of the Fes-Meknes region constitutes a cultural and civilisational treasure ». To date, nearly 53,000 craftsmen have been studied for handmade know-how in the city of Fes alone. The imperial city thus represents, on its own, a key player in craftsmanship.

For now, from the riad in Fes, around 38 craftsmen are spread between Fes and its region, with towns such as Sefrou, Taza and Boulemane benefiting from the « Morocco Handmade » label.

A label recognised for Morocco

Moroccan know-how represents a financial windfall for the Kingdom due to its richness and the wish of travellers who come to Morocco to take home a traditional souvenir. Craftsmanship is also a treasure because it is exported beautifully, supplying the whole world with products made from leather, pottery, wood and metal (coppersmith work).

The label process takes place in two stages: first the certification of production tools, and second the quality of the products and pieces created as part of the labelling.

In terms of communication, Moroccan craftsmanship will be accompanied by a graphic identity with a dedicated logo and communication.
